Localism

Love attaches to particulars — this person, this creek, this corner store — and particulars have places. Wendell Berry's Jefferson Lecture put it plainly: "it all turns on affection," and affection requires acquaintance; you can only love what you know, and you can only know at a certain scale. The economy Berry indicts is one run by people he calls "boomers" — optimizers with no attachment to any place — versus "stickers," who stay, know, and care.

Money, as it globalizes, sheds relationship at every hop. A dollar spent at a chain leaves town immediately; a dollar spent locally recirculates (the "local multiplier"), and — more importantly for this inquiry — stays attached to faces. The lender knows the baker. The funder walks past the thing they funded. Feedback is sensory, not reported.

Movements already working this seam: Slow Money (Woody Tasch — invest in local food systems "as if food, farms and fertility mattered," bringing money "back down to earth"), community land trusts, local currencies, BALLE / Common Future, mutual-aid networks, participatory budgeting at municipal scale.

1. Proximity is a love-preserving medium. The shorter the distance (physical or relational) between funder and funded, the less the flow needs metrics — you can see what your money did. Localism is a natural defense against the legibility trap (🩸goodharts-law): where there is acquaintance, there is no need for proxies.
2. Scale is a design variable, not an ambition. A funding circle small enough that every member can know every funded relation by name preserves particularity (🪢relationality). Growth beyond that point should mean replication (more circles) rather than expansion (bigger pools).
3. Repair over reach. Local love is often maintenance-shaped — fixing, tending, showing up weekly — which matches the practice-shape principle from 🪷metta better than launch-shaped philanthropy does.

Metta widens; localism roots. The metta sequence deliberately moves past the dear and the near, toward strangers, the difficult, all beings. A purely local love risks parochialism — funding our block and calling it virtue while the distant and the different go unloved. And some of what people love is placeless (a protocol, a language, a diaspora).

The synthesis available: circles that start local and widen — the metta order is the reconciliation. Begin where acquaintance makes love concrete; practice outward toward the stranger and the hard-to-love; let the local be the training ground, not the boundary. A mechanism might make this literal: every local circle tithes a fraction of its flow outward to a circle it will never meet.
