tl;dr

Lovingkindness is a practice, not a mood. It flows only where attention is placed — and it grows the longer the attention stays.

01

Metta is trained, not stumbled into: you send goodwill on purpose, in a set order.

It moves only where attention goes. Sustained attention turns a flicker into a current.

Given away, it doesn't run out — it widens: self, dear ones, strangers, the difficult, all beings.

02

The practice

Metta is trained like a scale — goodwill, repeated on purpose, in order.

more

Metta is one of the oldest attention practices we have. You sit, and you send goodwill — on purpose, in words, in order: may I be well. May they be well. You don't wait until you feel loving, the same way a musician doesn't wait until they feel like playing scales. You practice the feeling until the feeling is strong. Love, in this tradition, is not weather. It's a skill.

03

It flows where attention goes

No attention, no flow. Sustained attention turns a flicker into a current.

more

Here is the core mechanic: no attention, no flow. Lovingkindness doesn't drift toward things on its own — it goes exactly where you point it, and nowhere else. A moment of attention makes a flicker. Sustained attention makes a current. Sit with one person in mind for ten breaths and something actually changes — in you, and in how you'll meet them. The circles don't light themselves. You light them by looking, and you keep them lit by looking longer.

04

It widens as it strengthens

Self, dear ones, strangers, the difficult, all beings — each ring makes the next possible.

more

The practice moves outward in rings, and the order matters. Self first — you can't pour from an empty vessel. Then dear ones, where the current flows easily. Then strangers, where the muscle actually builds. Then the difficult — the person you'd rather not think about at all — which is the test. Then all beings, the horizon. Each ring is harder than the last, and each ring makes the next one possible.

05

It grows when given

Sending it doesn't spend it. The more you give, the more you have to give.

more

Now the strangest property: sending it doesn't spend it. Every other resource depletes when you give it away. Lovingkindness deepens. The more of it you send, the more of it you have to send — the practice enlarges the vessel it pours from. Whatever this thing is, it does not obey scarcity.

The question to carry

If lovingkindness flows only where sustained attention goes — where is your attention, and what is it watering?
